Koami is a colourful character who had to flee from his warm and colourful country. Bozen seems terribly grey and foreign to him.
Koamikoami is a workshop for children dealing with the recent refugee issue. Since Bozen is the last italian city before the borders of Austria and Germany, many refugees are stuck there. By listening to Koami’s story, the aim is to restore sensibility for the difficult situation of a person who had to leave everything behind. Children are by nature sensitive and still rather unprejudized. However, we cannot take it for granted that the surrounding people have sufficiently and neutrally informed them about the reasons why so many foreign looking people are seen in public places seemingly without having anything to do.
The assignment of the workshop was to build a house for Koami that would be as colourful as him and therefore make him feel at home. By using the technique of frottage, the children copied the patterns of Piazza Municipio onto the fabric for Koami’s tent. Because of their size, the handling of wood and fabric was only possible when everybody was helping. This emphasises the fact that integrational work can be realised only in a collective way.
Realised in collaboration with Raffaele Geronazzo and Veronika Schneider. Supervised by Giorgio Camuffo, Jonathan Pierini and Emmanuela de Cecco.
